Social Responsibility at CATIE

For several years CATIE has been promoting the development of technologies and knowledge of practices for sustainable environmental management and administration. For this reason CATIE encourages the efficient use of resources by implementing programs for savings with electricity, fuel and water; and it has undertaken institutional actions that have helped diminish the center’s ecological footprint.

With an idea toward reinforcing these actions and encouraging the implementation of its institutional social responsibility policy, in 2009 CATIE began its Social Responsibility Program. The activities developed in this program include:

1. CATIE International Fair

2. Solid waste management program

3. Energy efficiency plan

4. Ecological Blue Flag Program

5. Community outreach

6. Training

7. Volunteerism

8. External and internal alliances

CATIE believes that an institution should have social responsibility, to its internal community as well as to its students and the teaching and administrative staff and even the setting, meaning the communities that reside on our campus as well as those related to the country that is home to us: Costa Rica.

This is why we develop the International Fair and we strive to maintain the parameters and the qualities necessary to retain our Ecological Blue Flag. You can learn about both activities below.

Our Ecological Blue Flag Program

CATIE’s Ecological Blue Flag Committee was started in 2010. It was created to take action to ensure the institution’s sustainability and to raise awareness in people about the responsibility of environmental stewardship in order to stimulate a sustainable change in their behavior.

CATIE has twice obtained the Ecological Blue Flag in the category of Actions for Confronting Climate Change. The first time was in 2011 for CATIE’s Commercial Farm, and the second time was in 2012 for its campus.

A fun, healthy and educational Turrialba with CATIE’s International Fair

Art, music, culture, cuisine and the CatieNatura race are woven into a unique weekend with a focus on assisting the community.

One weekend a year CATIE opens its doors to thousands of visitors for a healthy and educational recreation activity suitable for the whole family: The International Fair that is held on the university campus with the backing of the institution’s Social Responsibility Program.

Science, art, music made in Costa Rica and music from other countries, sports activities –such as the CatieNatura race–, cultural and children’s events, as well as events created to raise awareness of other cultures, such as samples from other cuisines, are just part of what CATIE’s International Fair has to offer. The fair fosters cultural exchange by the more than 20 nationalities represented at CATIE with the beneficiary institutions and the general public.

CATIE’s International Fair has a history spanning more than 27 years and one of its main objectives is to raise funds for social welfare institutions in the canton of Turrialba. In 2011 and 2012 alone, the CATIE International Fair raised more than 26 million colones for social welfare institutions in the area.

How we organize our fair

The fair is organized by a committee consisting of CATIE staff members who work voluntarily on the entire process for the activity.

Moreover, there are several work teams that take charge of every detail of the fair. Along with the social welfare institutions that will be the beneficiaries, CATIE students of different nationalities form a work team for each country with a presence at the institution.

The fair becomes a reality thanks to the support of several sponsors, who get involved with the noble cause of raising funds for the area’s social welfare institutions.

The CatieNatura race

The CatieNatura race has been included in the International Fair since 2011 and it brings in hundreds of athletes who complete a 10 kilometer race.

CatieNatura has become a unique athletic event in Costa Rica because it has an environmental focus. The athletes run in the lush natural setting and CATIE plants three trees for each runner enrolled. These trees become part of a Commemorative Plantation that CATIE tends.

Feria Internacional
