Honduras Reinforces Its Commitment to Sustainable Livestock Farming
- The Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock and CATIE led a session of the National Platform for Sustainable Livestock Farming of Honduras to strengthen the country's livestock sector
On June 27, an ordinary session of the National Platform for Sustainable Livestock Farming of Honduras (PNGS) was held at the facilities of the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (SAG). The event, organized by SAG and CATIE (Tropical Agricultural Research and Higher Education Center) through the project Transforming the Honduran Livestock Sector into a Low Carbon Economy, known as MAF-Ganadería-HN, aimed to address crucial issues for the sustainable development of Honduran livestock farming.
The session brought together key stakeholders in the sector to follow up on ongoing actions and projects, as well as to outline new work plans for the coming year.
During the session, reports were presented on the new actors of PNGSH, and their participation was formalized. Additionally, the functioning of the Agricultural Development Committee (CDA) of SAG-FAO for the strengthening of the platform and the incorporation of regional livestock tables, highlighting their roles and functions, was discussed. A central point was the current status of the National Livestock Plan and the proposal for a work plan for 2025.
The work plan for the coming year will focus on supporting SAG in the collaborative development of the National Sustainable Beef Cattle Action Plan, harmonizing national and local work through the strengthening of regional tables in at least four departments, and developing a communication strategy for PNGS.
The session included the participation of public and private institutions, international cooperation, non-governmental organizations, and academia, all committed to transforming the livestock sector towards greater productivity and profitability while simultaneously reducing carbon emissions through sustainable practices.
The event emphasized the importance of maintaining a participatory and collaborative process, with active meetings of the subcommittees and the planning of the next ordinary meeting of the platform.
Finally, the collaboration of CATIE through the MAF-Ganadería-HN project in the publication and dissemination of the action plan, aligned with the new state policies of the Honduran agri-food sector, was highlighted.
This session marks a significant step towards more sustainable livestock farming in Honduras, consolidating efforts and resources to face the environmental and economic challenges of the livestock sector.
