- CATIE’s participation in this regional forum reaffirms its technical and scientific contribution to strengthening sustainable finance, climate resilience, and nature-positive investments in Latin America.
CATIE (Tropical Agricultural Research and Higher Education Center) participated in the Latin American Congress on Sustainable and Inclusive Banking, a regional event that brought together key actors from the financial sector, multilateral banking institutions, commercial banks, and organizations linked to sustainable development.
The institution’s participation highlighted the growing need for technical, scientific, and methodological capacities to measure the impact of investments focused on nature, sustainability, and climate resilience. In particular, the event confirmed CATIE’s relevance as a regional center with expertise in evidence generation, metric design, impact measurement, and technical support to strengthen nature finance.
Representing CATIE were delegates from the Livestock Unit, Environmental Economics, Climate Action, ACTIVA-CATIE, and the Strategic Partnerships Directorate, reflecting the institution’s interdisciplinary approach to linking science, innovation, public policy, investment, and territorial development.
In this context, the participation of the MAF-Ganadería-HN Project: “Transforming the Honduran Livestock Sector into a Low-Carbon Economy” was also highlighted. The project is implemented by CATIE in coordination with the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (SAG) and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (SERNA) of Honduras, with funding from the Mitigation Action Facility (MAF). Two project staff members participated in the congress, where the initiative was directly linked to the event’s themes by promoting the transformation of Honduran livestock production toward a low-carbon, resilient, and profitable economy, while reducing greenhouse gas emissions and strengthening sector sustainability.
In addition, the project promotes a financial model in partnership with BANHPROVI aimed at facilitating green credit with preferential interest rates for the implementation of sustainable livestock practices that help reduce emissions and improve farm profitability. This experience represents a concrete example of how collaboration among science, development banking, public institutions, and productive actors can mobilize climate finance toward solutions with measurable impact.
Through this participation, CATIE reaffirms its commitment to strengthening more sustainable and inclusive banking systems in Latin America by contributing scientific knowledge, technical capacities, innovation, and strategic partnerships to accelerate investments that generate environmental, social, and economic benefits.
