CATIE Promotes a Gender Approach in Sustainable Livestock Production in Campeche

• Twenty representatives from government institutions and partner organizations strengthened their knowledge and tools to integrate a gender approach into livestock development projects through a partnership between CATIE, UNDP-BIOFIN, and SEMABICCE.

On July 30, CATIE (Tropical Agricultural Research and Higher Education Center) conducted the workshop "Methodology and Tools for Implementing a Gender Approach in Development Projects with an Emphasis on Livestock Production in Campeche" as part of its efforts to promote more inclusive and sustainable livestock systems in the region.

The activity was supported by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) through the Biodiversity Finance Initiative (BIOFIN) and the Secretariat of Environment, Biodiversity, Climate Change and Energy (SEMABICCE). It was carried out within the framework of activities in the Báalam Beh Biological Corridor and forms part of the scaling-up phase of the MAF-Ganadería-HN Project, led by CATIE and funded by the Mitigation Action Facility.

Twenty representatives from key institutions involved in rural development and the agricultural sector participated in the workshop, including SEMABICCE, the Secretariat of Agricultural Development (SDA), the Secretariat of Agriculture and Rural Development (SADER), the National Forestry Commission (CONAFOR), and Pronatura Península de Yucatán. The event aimed to strengthen interinstitutional collaboration and promote policies and projects with a more equitable and inclusive perspective.

During the workshop, participants reviewed key concepts related to gender equality and equity, learned how to identify gender gaps, and explored methodological tools for integrating a gender perspective into the design, implementation, and evaluation of development projects. They also examined practical instruments for assessing access to and control over resources, the quality of participation, and the practical and strategic needs of women and men in rural production systems.

For CATIE, BIOFIN-UNDP, and the partner institutions, initiatives such as this reaffirm their commitment to building more sustainable, resilient, and inclusive livestock systems, where gender equality is recognized as a cross-cutting pillar for improving the well-being of rural families and strengthening biodiversity conservation in Campeche.
