Colombians have a new financing option to study at CATIE
- It is the COLFUTURO Scholarship Credit
October 6th, 2017. Following the signing of an agreement between CATIE (The Tropical Agricultural Research and Higher Education Center) and COLFUTURO, Colombians can now opt for a financing option, credit-grant style, to study at the Center, which could condone up to 80% of the amount requested.
In addition, CATIE will grant a partial grant of 15% to students who obtain funding from COLFUTURO. This is part of the benefits of the recently signed agreement with the purpose that Colombians can apply and obtain funding to pursue their postgraduate studies in CATIE, either masters or doctorates.
The agreement was managed by Isabel Gutiérrez, dean of CATIE’s Graduate School; Cristian Zúñiga, from the Office of Strategic Alliances of CATIE; and Jerónimo Castro, executive director of COLFUTURO.
The Credit Grant model covers up to USD 25,000 a year, for a maximum of two years, for a total of USD 50,000.
Zúñiga explained that once graduated, 40% of the total amount awarded is condoned if the graduate returns to Colombia and stays for three years in the country. Also, you get an additional 20% of debt forgiveness if the beneficiary is linked as a public official teacher or researcher in a full-time educational entity and 20% more if working outside Bogotá and its metropolitan area.
"In summary, in total, a Colombian student could receive the forgiveness of up to 80% of the amount he applied for as an educational loan" said Zúñiga.
Currently, there are about 25 Colombian students intending to enter to CATIE for the 2018-2019 period, who will be contacted to approach COLFUTURO and formally apply to the Scholarship Credit Program.
