Orton Memorial Library receives important historical collection
- The mobilized collection amounts to approximately 17 000 documents, 90% of which are already in digital format
In order to unify its historical collection, promote proper preservation of documents and strengthen the integration and electronic management of its resources, the Library at the headquarters of the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) in Coronado, Costa Rica, transferred approximately 17,000 documents to the Orton Memorial Library (BCO), located in Turrialba, Costa Rica and managed by IICA and CATIE (The Tropical Agricultural Research and Higher Education Center).
According to Matilde Gómez, coordinator of the Orton IICA/CATIE Memorial Library, in addition to the unification of physical documents, the idea is that there should be a single digital platform where all the information resources are integrated.
IICA and CATIE are committed to efficient document management that ensures 24/7 access, regardless of the geographical location of the user, which has allowed the online catalog to be strengthened.
In addition, as part of the commitment to preserve invaluable bibliographic resources, in 2017 the infrastructure of the BCO was improved and a space was created with a controlled environment, which makes it possible to safeguard historical collections.
