MARN, CATIE, CGP+L and Municipality of Guatemala promote the integration of circular economy into municipal development plans

Within the framework of the technical assistance "Support for the implementation of the National Strategy for Development with low greenhouse gas emissions, through the integration of circular economy in municipal development plans", last Wednesday, June 23, CATIE (Tropical Agricultural Research and Higher Education Center), MARN (Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources of Guatemala), CGP+L (Guatemalan Center for Cleaner Production) and the Municipality of Guatemala, successfully carried out a socialization activity with the objective of presenting the work plan of  such project and start the coordination to implement the characterization of common solid waste and industrial waste in the Municipality of Guatemala.  The project will also be co-creating with the municipality the circular economy strategy for waste management.

The event was attended by representatives of the Department of Climate Change Mitigation and the Directorate for Waste and Solid Waste Management of the Ministry of the Environment and Natural Resources of the Government of Guatemala, as well as representatives of the Directorate of the Environment, the Department of Environmental Management and the Directorate of Waste and Solid Waste Management of the Municipality of Guatemala.

This technical assistance stems from a cooperation request and is part of the Climate Action Enhancement Package (CAEP), financed by the NDCPartnership, which complements processes such as training 340 municipalities in Guatemala on the preparation of integrated solid waste management plans; these trainings are about to conclude their second phase.

"The project included support for ten municipalities and the characterization of waste from two municipalities as part of the agreement, with the Municipality of Guatemala being one of the two selected to carry out the characterization process," said Saúl Pérez, head of the Climate Change Mitigation Department of the Climate Change Directorate of the Ministry of the Environment and Natural Resources, Guatemala.

The project is funded by the Climate Technology Center and Network (CTCN) and led by Gracia Lanza, coordinator of CATIE's Economics, Environment and Sustainable Agribusiness Unit (UEAAS, its Spanish acronym).
