The Forest Seed Bank (BSF) was created in 1967 to support forestry research. Today it is a self-sustained unit within CATIE’s Directorate of Administration and Finance, with an annual distribution of 8-12 tons of seeds to more than 15 countries.
The BSF maintains a seed stock from 40-50 forest species important for commercial reforestation, agroforestry, ecological restoration and ornamental purposes. It also provides training and technical support to all levels, from individual producers to government programs.
The BSF’s breeding program has developed high quality genetic materials that have excelled in trials and plantations worldwide. These include melina (Gmelina arborea) and teak (Tectona grandis) seeds, certified by the Government of Costa Rica’s National Seed Office.
With over 48 years of experience, the BSF is ready to deliver seed to any destination worldwide within 1-2 weeks after receiving the import permits, and two days for local delivery.
To provide a better service to its users, the BSF has authorized distributors in Belize (Westroad Development Ltd.), Mexico (Agrinet), Colombia (El Semillero), Ecuador (Profafor Latinoamérica) and Bolivia (Plant For).
