Agroforestry systems

Since its inception, agroforestry has had a leading role in CATIE's work in Latin America.

In fact, our great strengths in agroforestry systems are the fields of livestock production, environment and perennial crops such as coffee and cocoa, since we have been investigating these areas for over 30 years through research projects and implementation in the field, and providing support and training to hundreds of technicians and rural families.

In our projects we study the use of trees on farms to improve the production of ecosystem services, to diversify production, management of yards and home gardens for food security, shade and hedgerow management, among other topics.

We also carry out academic training efforts. Proof of this is our international academic masters in Tropical Agroforestry that is characterized by its long track record and for helping its students develop applied research in the field that has great scientific and development value.

At CATIE have an extensive network of partners who conduct research in the field of agroforestry, including the World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF), the Center for International Cooperation in Agronomic Research for Development (CIRAD) and the Center for Agricultural Bioscience International (CABI).

Our work in agroforestry systems is considered unique, because it brings together the best of the scientific and the development worlds.
