The Latin American Chair on Environmental Decisions for Global Change (CLADA)

Who are we?

CLADA counts with a group of researchers and collaborators that come from different fields of research and development processes. Each member of our team has diverse experiences working with environmental issues.

 

DIRECTOR
RAFFAELE VIGNOLA

 

Raffaele holds a doctorate in sciences from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (ETH) and is currently CLADA’s director. Raffaele has been working on the design and implementation of applied research projects, adopting a trans-disciplinary and multi-disciplinary focus to support processes of policy development alongside actors at different levels of civil society, academia, decision makers, and public administration. Raffaele has published diverse research articles and book chapters due to his experience of over ten years in applied research concerning the human dimension of climate change responses based on land use in Latin America.

 RESEARCHER
PÁVEL BAUTISTA

 

 

Pavel is an agronomic engineer and a rural development specialist. He holds a Master’s in Science degree in agricultural economics from CATIE, and a doctorate in tropical agroforestry with an emphasis in rural development from Bangor University, United Kingdom. Pavel has worked as a consultant in various international cooperation programs in Central America, and as an assistant professor in CATIE since 2004. He has technical experience in areas of fruit growing, environmental livestock farming, and ecological agriculture. Furthermore, he has worked in the management and evaluation of rural development processes using mixed methods (participative, qualitative, and quantitative).

MARIELA MORALES

 

Mariela holds a title as an Engineer in Business Administration, with a focus in foreign trade from the Contemporary University of Chile, a title as a Commercial Engineer from the Arturo Prat University in Chile, and a master’s degree in Environmental Socioeconomics from CATIE. She has worked for over 17 years in the creation and management of social, economic, and environmental tools, through processes of development and capacity building in the vulnerable regions of Chile, Peru, Costa Rica, Argentina, and Bolivia.

RESEARCHER
GRÉGOIRE LECLERC

 

Grégoire is a physicist, a geomatician, and a senior scientist of the French agricultural research and international cooperation organization (CIRAD). Leclerc has been involved in natural resource and watershed management research for over 18 years while working for international research organizations in Latin America, France, and Africa. He holds ample experience in international cooperation project management in developing countries, and has published two books and 25 articles in peer-reviewed journals. Since 2011, he is a prominent CIRAD scientist, in CATIE’s Climate Change and Watersheds Program, and is a co-lead researcher in the project FUTURAGUA.

RESEARCHER
KARINA POVEDA

 

Karina is an agronomist engineer with a degree from EARTH University, with a specialization in agro-ecology and sustainable management of natural resources. She has experience in the implementation of rural development project in Costa Rica seeking community empowerment, capacity development, and the construction of more just and prosperous societies. Currently, Karina supports CLADA research.

RESEARCHER
PAVEL RIVERA

 

An agricultural economist, with a specialization in agri-environment (linked to topics of natural resource valuation and environmental impact assessment). Has experience related to socioeconomic analyses and information processing. Currently, Pavel supports CLADA research.

ASSOCIATE RESEARCHER
TIM MCDANIELS

  Tim is a specialist in decision sciences and policy analysis for society’s risks related to environment and technology. He’s a professor of Risk and Decision Sciences, named in two interdisciplinary programs of the University of British Columbia. Previously, he served as the director of IRES and the College of Interdisciplinary Studies. Furthermore, he was editor for the decision-making area of Risk Analysis magazine for five years, and is a member of the American Society of Risk Analysis. Tim is an associate researcher at CATIE’s Climate Change and Watersheds Program. Currently, his research addresses the issues of risk management using society’s values and expert’s understanding.
     

ASSOCIATE RESEARCHER
CHRIS KUZDAS

  Christopher Kuzdas es candidato a doctor por la Escuela de Sostenibilidad de la Universidad Estatal de Arizona y miembro del Sustainability Transitions Research Lab. Cuenta con un grado de maestría en administración pública (2009) y ha trabajado en proyectos de desarrollo comunitario, planeación y conservación en los Estados Unidos, Nicaragua y Tailandia, y ha dirigido proyectos de investigación, divulgación y consulta para la gobernanza del agua y la mitigación de conflictos por agua en la zona árida noroeste de Costa Rica desde 2010. Su trabajo pretende entender y abordar soluciones novedosas a problemas complejos y disputados sobre sostenibilidad.
