Graduate courses

The course “Environmental Decisions for Global Change” which will be given at CATIE’s graduate school will be carried out through 12 sessions; in these, students will make use of solid scientific knowledge – trans-disciplinary, integration of quantitative and qualitative knowledge, and transition processes between science and society – as well as practical tools to understand the complexities of the real world, and be able to offer viable solutions. The course will also focus on the use of scientific methods in the field of decision science – including cognitive and social psychology, sociology, and trans-disciplinary methods, such as scenario planning, negotiation analysis, participative modelling, etc. – applied to concrete environmental problems which require solving through use of a multidisciplinary focus.

International courses

  • II International course: Theory, tools, and processes for planning and implementation of mitigation and adaptation to climate change: leadership, decision making, and governance for the mobilization of knowledge to action.
From October 23rd to November 4th, 2016. CATIE, Turrialba, Costa Rica.

This course builds upon the knowledge generated by different fields in the science of decisions and leadership, as well as over ten years of teaching, research, and action in topics involving climate change mitigation and adaptation, watershed management, and productive chain analysis from a territorial perspective.

The course combines the theory – broadening the concepts of decisions theory and leadership of processes in the interface of science and society – with practice, for understanding individual and collective leadership, as well as guided visits to case studies in climate change mitigation and adaptation.

The information provided and the experiences developed throughout the course will help participants answer the following questions:

  1. What kind of leadership is necessary for the complex challenges of global change?

  2. What diagnostic and accompanying planning process tools can help in reading the problem and designing its solutions?

The course’s methodology is based on a participative, critical, and constructive focus, combining theoretical classes on planning process leadership on topics of global change, the use of didactic and innovative tools, an experience-based perspective through visits to case studies of climate change mitigation and adaptation in different productive and environmental conditions, and collective learning through the experience of the participants.
