Costa Rica

Based in tropical America

In the early 1940s, Henry A. Wallace, secretary of agriculture and vice president of the United States, advocated for the creation of an inter-American institution for tropical agriculture dedicated to research and graduate education that would contribute to development processes.

In response, in 1942, the Pan American Union established the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) in Costa Rica. Then, in 1973, CATIE was established as an independent institution, through an agreement between the government of Costa Rica and the IICA. The CATIE headquarters is in Turrialba, 63 kilometers from San José, the capital of Costa Rica.

The big family at the CATIE Guatemala NTO

The CATIE Guatemala National Technical Office is, in the most accurate of definitions, one big family. From the maintenance and messaging personnel to the professionals in charge of projects, administrative areas and CATIE’s formal representations, all work in harmony forming a fully symbiotic human unit. They are the ones who comprise us.

In-Country Offices

In each country where we operate we are the ideal partner for innovative development projects based on our unique and differentiating strengths in knowledge and human capital.

Thanks to the National Technical Offices (NTOs) and the national representatives, CATIE is an effective contributor to rural development in Central and South America and the Caribbean. This presence leads to intense collaboration on many scales with thousands of families, hundreds of partners and millions of hectares impacted.
