Food security

To meet the challenges of food security in the Americas, we work in four key thematic areas at CATIE.

Rescuing and conserving agrobiodiversity

At CATIE we have international collections in the public domain that include thousands of varieties of crops from many different regions of the world. These collections possess enormous potential for identifying and promoting materials that are promising due to their high tolerance to drought, floods, marginal soils and other limiting factors caused by climate change.

We also promote the establishment of community seed banks and regional exchange of materials. These tasks are mainly carried out by our Germplasm Bank and the Agroforestry and Sustainable Agriculture Program (PAAS).

Promoting climate resilient agro-ecosystems and landscapes

As part of our work we design integrated farming systems that combine high productivity with high profitability and the effective conservation of natural resources.

Strengthening human capital

Through our Graduate School and training program at CATIE, we contribute to the preparation of human capital that is ready to lead processes for sustainable production intensification integrated with climate change adaptation and mitigation measures in order to improve food security.

Strengthening South-South cooperation

Since 2009 we have collaborated with the Food Security Center of the University of Hohenheim, Germany, as one of our five global partners. This collaboration has enabled the strengthening of both institutions through a series of activities, such as workshops and training courses.

One of our main strengths is the ability to integrate our agroforestry and sustainable agriculture work into the fields of climate change, watershed management, and forest and biodiversity management, which makes us an institution capable of leading the development of climate-smart territories.
