Family farming: a component for development

In the area of family farming, we focus on building capacity in rural families, developing processes that enable them to learn new primary production techniques for the management of orchards and farming plots as well as leadership, rural development and marketing in rural micro-industries.

At CATIE we see family farming as a key component for territorial development, since it links a series of actions with processes that are important for rural families, such as food security and the conservation of agricultural biodiversity.

We believe that family farming fosters the innovation of strategies to address climate change, contributes to sustainable natural resource management, provides strategies for poverty reduction and it is inclusive, because men, women and youth participate actively, thereby consolidating respect for different cultures and traditions.
