Applied ecological research and ecological monitoring

This sub-area of the Forest line of work refers to the long-term research in forests and territories that we do at CATIE.

The goal of these studies is to generate reliable and relevant scientific knowledge on human impacts to ecosystem services to support their management and improve the welfare of rural communities. The aspects we work on in this sub-area are:

  • Forestry production systems in both planted and natural forests and agroforestry systems
  • Structure and function of forests in altitudinal gradients and adaptation to possible climate change effects on ecological processes and ecosystem services
  • Restoration of ecosystem services through secondary forests and plantation conversion
  • The impact of management operations on biodiversity in managed natural forests
  • Maintenance of biodiversity in fragmented ecosystems
  • Functionality and viability of biological corridors
  • Support to permanent regional platforms for data management and distribution
