Main Governing Bodies of CATIE

CATIE has three main governing bodies:

1. The Inter-American Board of Agriculture

2. The Superior Council of Ministers

3. The Board of Directors

The Inter-American Board of Agriculture

The Inter-American Board of Agriculture (JIA, its Spanish acronym) is the supreme governing body of CATIE. It is integrated by 34 member states and holds an ordinary meeting every two years.

The Superior Council of Ministers

The Superior Council of Ministers is composed of one Minister from each of the CATIE member countries with ties to the agricultural sector and/or natural resources, the Director General of IICA and a representative of the JIA. It is chaired by the Minister of Agriculture and Livestock of Costa Rica and the Director General of IICA serves as Vice-Chairman.

CATIE's regular member countries are: Belize, Bolivia, Colombia, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Dominican Republic and Venezuela.

The Board of Directors

The Board of Directors is composed of 13 members, who serve ad honorem and meet at least once a year. Each member is carefully selected and serves in a personal capacity. These include four permanent members: the Minister of Agriculture and Livestock of Costa Rica or his representative, the Director General of IICA or his representative, a representative of the JIA and a representative of the Superior Council of Ministers; as well as four directors representing CATIE member countries and five directors representing the international community.

Its guidelines are implemented by Muhammad Ibrahim, CATIE's director general, who is also the Ex officio Secretary of the Board of Directors. He is supported in this mission by the Deputy Director General and the Directorates of Research for Inclusive Green Development, Education, Outreach and Global Partnerships, and Finance and Corporate Services.
