{"id":26817,"date":"2024-05-09T07:39:36","date_gmt":"2024-05-09T13:39:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.catie.ac.cr\/?p=26817"},"modified":"2024-05-09T07:39:38","modified_gmt":"2024-05-09T13:39:38","slug":"catie-y-polyplants-firman-alianza-para-mejorar-la-produccion-de-cafe-y-cacao-en-centroamerica-y-el-caribe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.catie.ac.cr\/en\/2024\/05\/09\/catie-y-polyplants-firman-alianza-para-mejorar-la-produccion-de-cafe-y-cacao-en-centroamerica-y-el-caribe\/","title":{"rendered":"CATIE and Polyplants sign a partnership to improve coffee and cocoa production in Central America and the Caribbean"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p><ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><em>Memorandum of Understanding establishes a collaboration between CATIE and the private sector to increase the availability of improved coffee hybrids to producers in the region<\/em><\/li><\/ul><p>The Tropical Agricultural Research and Higher Education Center (CATIE) announced a new strategic partnership with the Swiss company Polyplants, specialized in the mass propagation and genetic improvement of coffee and cocoa plants.&nbsp;<\/p><p>This agreement aims to expand the annual production of improved coffee and cocoa varieties from CATIE's genetic improvement program.<\/p><div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"850\" height=\"403\" src=\"https:\/\/www.catie.ac.cr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/CATIE-Polyplan2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-26821\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.catie.ac.cr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/CATIE-Polyplan2.jpg 850w, https:\/\/www.catie.ac.cr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/CATIE-Polyplan2-300x142.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.catie.ac.cr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/CATIE-Polyplan2-768x364.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.catie.ac.cr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/CATIE-Polyplan2-18x9.jpg 18w, https:\/\/www.catie.ac.cr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/CATIE-Polyplan2-600x284.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 850px) 100vw, 850px\" \/><\/figure><\/div><p>For more than 35 years, CATIE has been at the forefront of research and development of coffee and cocoa varieties with disease tolerance, high productivity, and exceptional quality.&nbsp;<\/p><p>Thanks to this work, thousands of agricultural producers in Central America and the Caribbean have had access to high-quality genetic materials that have allowed them to improve the productivity of their farms and secure a more sustainable production.<\/p><p>The new alliance will allow both entities to increase production of improved plants, taking advantage of the Swiss company's advanced mass propagation technologies.&nbsp;<\/p><p>Polyplants, know how in tissue culture and biotechnology, will contribute to help CATIE bring these improved varieties to a greater number of producers.<\/p><p>The collaboration not only aims to increase the production of coffee and cocoa plants, but also to establish a business model that allows support and continue development in genetic improvement.
