{"id":27108,"date":"2024-05-14T12:01:50","date_gmt":"2024-05-14T18:01:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.catie.ac.cr\/?p=27108"},"modified":"2024-05-14T13:06:43","modified_gmt":"2024-05-14T19:06:43","slug":"productores-de-santa-barbara-de-heredia-se-capacitan-en-conservacion-de-semillas-en-el-catie","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.catie.ac.cr\/en\/2024\/05\/14\/productores-de-santa-barbara-de-heredia-se-capacitan-en-conservacion-de-semillas-en-el-catie\/","title":{"rendered":"Producers from Santa B\u00e1rbara de Heredia receive training in seed conservation at CATIE"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p><ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><em><em><em>These activities are crucial for disseminating the vast knowledge accumulated by CATIE over its 48 years of experience in orthodox seed conservation.<\/em><\/em><\/em><\/li><\/ul><p>Twenty-three producers from Santa B\u00e1rbara de Heredia immersed themselves in a day of learning about seed conservation at the prestigious CATIE campus in Turrialba.<\/p><p>The initiative, coordinated by the Extension Agency of the Ministry of Agriculture of Santa B\u00e1rbara de Heredia, aimed primarily to share with participants the key processes for preserving the vitality of seeds.<\/p><p>The training, led by CATIE's specialist in Coffee and Cacao Genetic Improvement, Daniel Fern\u00e1ndez, comprehensively addressed the fundamental aspects of seed conservation.<\/p><p>From collection methods to proper storage practices, producers received comprehensive training to optimize the quality and longevity of their seeds.<\/p><div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"432\" src=\"https:\/\/www.catie.ac.cr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/capacitacion-semillas2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-27111\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.catie.ac.cr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/capacitacion-semillas2.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.catie.ac.cr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/capacitacion-semillas2-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.catie.ac.cr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/capacitacion-semillas2-18x10.jpg 18w, https:\/\/www.catie.ac.cr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/capacitacion-semillas2-600x338.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/figure><\/div><p>A highlight of the day was the visit to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.infobae.com\/america\/america-latina\/2023\/07\/28\/el-impactante-tesoro-de-semillas-de-costa-rica-para-enfrentar-al-cambio-climatico-y-las-crisis-alimentarias\/\">CATIE's Orthodox Seed Germplasm Bank<\/a>. Here, producers had the unique opportunity to witness conservation processes in action, thus enhancing their understanding and appreciation of these essential practices.<\/p><p>The Germplasm Bank preserves 6,202 genetic samples of crops of agricultural, food, and cultural importance for the Mesoamerican region.<\/p><p>The most significant <em>Cucurbitaceae<\/em> collection constitutes the second most important collection in terms of the quantity of conserved accessions worldwide and the most important in terms of availability.
