CATIE (Tropical Agricultural Research and Higher Education Center) participated from June 18 to 20 in a co-design workshop for the \"1000 Landscapes for 1 Billion People\" initiative, known as 1000L. The event was held at the National Conservation Training Center (NCTC) in West Virginia, United States, coordinated by Eco Agriculture Partners.<\/p>
Roger Villalobos, a researcher from the Climate Action Unit and chairman of the board of the Latin American Model Forest Network (RLABM), led the CATIE delegation.<\/p>

<\/figure><\/div>The RLABM integrates 34 forest landscape governance platforms in 14 countries of the region, coordinated by CATIE's Climate Action Unit.<\/p>
Villalobos was accompanied by Natalia Ruiz-Guevara, an official from the World Resources Institute (WRI) and vice-chair of the RLABM board; and Max Yamauchi Levy, an official from Eco Agriculture Partners and a collaborator of the RLABM coordinating team at CATIE.<\/p>
The main objectives of the workshop were to refine the theory of change for the 1000L initiative, develop key performance indicators for the next phase, and establish the delivery of services for the initiative.<\/p>
Participants also discussed monitoring, evaluation, and learning (MEL) principles for landscape outcomes, service delivery, and system change.<\/p>

<\/figure><\/div>There were ample opportunities for the exchange of ideas based on international efforts, and focus groups were held on topics such as management technology, landscape financing, and partnership strengthening. The workshop included a field visit to a landscape to observe sustainable management practices in action.<\/p>
With more than 20 years of collaboration with Eco Agriculture Partners in landscape management, CATIE is a technical partner of the 1000 Landscapes initiative. Both organizations have jointly worked on multiple projects and activities to promote sustainable forest landscape management in Latin America.<\/p>
The 1000L initiative aims to establish itself as a global technical support platform for landscape management processes, and CATIE works to ensure that the experiences of participatory sustainable landscape management of the RLABM feed into these efforts, providing tools and technical criteria to other management platforms around the world.<\/p>
CATIE's participation in this workshop reflects its ongoing commitment to sustainability and collaborative forest landscape management, highlighting its crucial role in promoting practices that benefit both local communities and the global environment.<\/p>
