The activity was facilitated by the Watersheds, Water Security and Soils Unit of the Tropical Agricultural Research and Higher Education Center (CATIE) and took place from July 23 to 26, 2024.<\/p><p>The technical tour was attended by 23 professionals, including 7 women, who are part of the project \u201cRecovery of the natural resources of the sub-watershed of the Jamao and Veragua rivers\u201d, executed by the Ministry of Agriculture.<\/p><div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"850\" height=\"567\" src=\"https:\/\/www.catie.ac.cr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/Gira-Cuencas-RD-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-28737\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.catie.ac.cr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/Gira-Cuencas-RD-2.jpg 850w, https:\/\/www.catie.ac.cr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/Gira-Cuencas-RD-2-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.catie.ac.cr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/Gira-Cuencas-RD-2-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.catie.ac.cr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/Gira-Cuencas-RD-2-18x12.jpg 18w, https:\/\/www.catie.ac.cr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/Gira-Cuencas-RD-2-600x400.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 850px) 100vw, 850px\" \/><\/figure><\/div><p>\u201cThe objective of being here is to take advantage of the experience that has been generated at CATIE on the subject of watershed management, extrapolate it and take advantage of it to make more efficient use of resources in the project for the recovery of the Jamao and Veragua river sub-watershed\u201d said Jos\u00e9 Rafael Jim\u00e9nez, project technician.<\/p><p>The first part of the training activity took place at CATIE's campus in Turrialba, where CATIE's conceptual approaches to watershed management and co-management were shared. In addition, complementary approaches such as Nature-based Solutions (NBS) and the \u201cfrom the mountain to the coast\u201d approach were addressed, as well as social aspects of participation and inclusion in watershed co-management.  Finally, practical tools for the implementation of these approaches and the contextualization of watershed planning, such as program and project zoning, were shared.<\/p><div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"850\" height=\"567\" src=\"https:\/\/www.catie.ac.cr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/Gira-Cuencas-RD-5.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-28740\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.catie.ac.cr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/Gira-Cuencas-RD-5.jpg 850w, https:\/\/www.catie.ac.cr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/Gira-Cuencas-RD-5-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.catie.ac.cr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/Gira-Cuencas-RD-5-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.catie.ac.cr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/Gira-Cuencas-RD-5-18x12.jpg 18w, https:\/\/www.catie.ac.cr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/Gira-Cuencas-RD-5-600x400.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 850px) 100vw, 850px\" \/><\/figure><\/div><p>During the sessions, a set of watershed management plans were used as inputs to guide the exercises, including the management and co-management plan for the binational Pedernales river watershed(Haiti and Dominican Republic) and the <a href=\"https:\/\/ebalac.com\/es\/noticias\/56-noticias\/405-cuenca-del-rio-sarapiqui-cuenta-con-un-plan-de-manejo-de-cuenca\">management plan for the Sarapiqu\u00ed<\/a> river watershed (Costa Rica), which were developed with the assistance of CATIE, as well as the management plan for the Reventaz\u00f3n river watershed.<\/p><p>Finally, the activity was complemented with two field tours that allowed the participants to learn about the context of intervention in two contrasting watersheds: the Reventaz\u00f3n and Sarapiqu\u00ed river watersheds. \u201cIn these spaces, emphasis was placed on learning about the experience of the watershed organizations that, at different stages of maturity, have been leading the management of these watersheds: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/comcurecr\">COMCURE<\/a> (Commission for the Management of the Reventaz\u00f3n River Watershed) and CODESOSA (Commission for the Sustainable Development of the Sarapiqu\u00ed River Watershed); and cultural aspects such as archeology and natural history in these watersheds were also addressed,\u201d detailed Laura Benegas Negri, director of Research in Inclusive Green Development (DIDVI) and coordinator of CATIE's Watersheds, Water Security and Soils Unit.<\/p><div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"850\" height=\"392\" src=\"https:\/\/www.catie.ac.cr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/Gira-Cuencas-RD-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-28738\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.catie.ac.cr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/Gira-Cuencas-RD-3.jpg 850w, https:\/\/www.catie.ac.cr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/Gira-Cuencas-RD-3-300x138.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.catie.ac.cr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/Gira-Cuencas-RD-3-768x354.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.catie.ac.cr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/Gira-Cuencas-RD-3-18x8.jpg 18w, https:\/\/www.catie.ac.cr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/Gira-Cuencas-RD-3-600x277.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 850px) 100vw, 850px\" \/><\/figure><\/div><p>The project \u201cRecovery of the natural resources of the sub-watershed of the Jamao and Veragua rivers\u201d is led by the Ministry of Agriculture of the Dominican Republic and is being developed in the provinces of Hermanas Mirabal and Espaillat.
