This genetic bank will facilitate joint studies between both institutions, with the objective of identifying new genetic attributes, responding to climate change challenges, and enhancing the competitiveness of the coffee sector.<br><\/p><div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"850\" height=\"567\" src=\"https:\/\/www.catie.ac.cr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/ICAFE-CATIE2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-32736\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.catie.ac.cr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/ICAFE-CATIE2.jpg 850w, https:\/\/www.catie.ac.cr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/ICAFE-CATIE2-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.catie.ac.cr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/ICAFE-CATIE2-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.catie.ac.cr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/ICAFE-CATIE2-18x12.jpg 18w, https:\/\/www.catie.ac.cr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/ICAFE-CATIE2-600x400.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 850px) 100vw, 850px\" \/><\/figure><\/div><p><br>\u201cOne of the key contributions of this alliance is the possibility of generating new coffee varieties using biotechnological tools, aiming to offer alternatives that are more resistant to climate changes and diseases. Additionally, this working collection will serve as a partial backup of the collection currently maintained by CATIE in Turrialba, ensuring the long-term conservation of coffee\u2019s genetic diversity,\u201d explained William Solano, Curator of CATIE\u2019s International Coffee Collection.<\/p><p>The agreement, which has an initial projection of 20 years with the possibility of extension, includes concrete actions from its first stage, such as:<\/p><div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"542\" height=\"709\" src=\"https:\/\/www.catie.ac.cr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/ICAFE-CATIE3.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-32737\" style=\"width:415px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.catie.ac.cr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/ICAFE-CATIE3.jpg 542w, https:\/\/www.catie.ac.cr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/ICAFE-CATIE3-229x300.jpg 229w, https:\/\/www.catie.ac.cr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/ICAFE-CATIE3-9x12.jpg 9w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 542px) 100vw, 542px\" \/><\/figure><\/div><ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Propagation of selected accessions through vegetative methods to ensure genetic quality.<\/li>\n\n<li>Land preparation and plant establishment.<\/li>\n\n<li>Agronomic maintenance, including mineral nutrition and disease control over the years.<\/li><\/ul><p>Through this collaboration, both institutions expect to generate coffee varieties with better agronomic traits, greater resistance to biotic and abiotic factors, and improved organoleptic qualities that meet the demands of an evolving market. \u201cThis initiative will help the Costa Rican coffee sector remain competitive and sustainable over time,\u201d detailed Solano.<\/p><p>The protocol signing ceremony of the agreement was attended by representatives of both institutions, including Gustavo Jim\u00e9nez, executive director of ICAFE; Mart\u00edn Hidalgo, technical manager of ICAFE; and Andr\u00e9s Piedra, promotion and outreach manager of ICAFE. On behalf of CATIE, attendees included Dr. Luis Pocasangre, director general; Rolando Cerda, leader of the Agroforestry and Genetic Improvement Unit for Coffee and Cocoa; and Solano.<\/p><p>The authorities agreed on the importance of this alliance for the future of coffee in Costa Rica and the key role it will play in agricultural innovation.<\/p><p>\"This alliance represents a significant step forward in conserving and developing varieties that can respond to the sector\u2019s challenges. Strengthening research and ensuring genetic diversity is key to the future of Costa Rican coffee,\" stated Dr. Pocasangre.<\/p><p>Likewise, as ICAFE\u2019s executive director, Jim\u00e9nez stated that the agreement is an investment in the future of Costa Rican coffee producers. \u201cStrengthening research and the conservation of genetic diversity will allow us to develop more resistant and productive varieties, ensuring that our coffee-growing families can face climate and market challenges with better tools.
