This forum provided a space to analyze the challenges and opportunities in the development and implementation of PES programs in Mexico and other countries in the region.<\/p><div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"531\" height=\"709\" src=\"https:\/\/www.catie.ac.cr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/pago-servicios-ambientales2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-32988\" style=\"width:385px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.catie.ac.cr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/pago-servicios-ambientales2.jpg 531w, https:\/\/www.catie.ac.cr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/pago-servicios-ambientales2-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.catie.ac.cr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/pago-servicios-ambientales2-9x12.jpg 9w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 531px) 100vw, 531px\" \/><\/figure><\/div><p>The workshop included the exchange of practical experiences, lessons from scientific literature on the subject, and strategies to improve the effectiveness and sustainability of PES.<\/p><p>This event brought together international experts in environmental economics, conservation policies, and natural resource management, including representatives from Duke University, the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB), Seattle University, the University of the Andes (UNI ANDES), Purdue University, Indiana University, as well as Natura and Mexican Ecosystems, among others.<\/p><p>Representing CATIE, researcher R\u00f3ger Madrigal, coordinator of the Environmental Economics and Sustainable Agribusiness Unit (UEAAS\/<a href=\"https:\/\/www.efdinitiative.org\/central-america\">EfD<\/a>), participated. He shared the case of Costa Rica, with a special focus on the factors that have enabled the permanence of PES over time, as well as CATIE\u2019s experience in designing and implementing PES in Latin American and Caribbean countries.<\/p><p>During his presentation, Madrigal highlighted: \u201cPayments for Environmental Services programs are a fundamental tool in ecosystem conservation;
