{"id":34988,"date":"2025-05-28T07:45:24","date_gmt":"2025-05-28T13:45:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.catie.ac.cr\/?p=34988"},"modified":"2025-05-28T07:45:43","modified_gmt":"2025-05-28T13:45:43","slug":"catie-comparte-experiencia-en-restauracion-ecologica-de-manglares-en-foro-regional-sobre-tecnologia-y-finanzas-climaticas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.catie.ac.cr\/en\/2025\/05\/28\/catie-comparte-experiencia-en-restauracion-ecologica-de-manglares-en-foro-regional-sobre-tecnologia-y-finanzas-climaticas\/","title":{"rendered":"CATIE shares experience in ecological mangrove restoration at regional forum on climate technology and finance"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><em><em><em><em><em><em>The \u201cCuerval Sostenible\u201d initiative stands out as a regional example of technical innovation and community empowerment for mangrove conservation on Colombia\u2019s Pacific coast.<\/em><\/em><\/em><\/em><\/em><\/em><\/li><\/ul><p>During the Regional Forum of National Designated Entities (NDEs) and the Capacity Building Program on Climate Technology and Finance for Latin America and the Caribbean, CATIE (Tropical Agricultural Research and Higher Education Center) presented the progress of its \u201cCuerval Sostenible\u201d project, an ongoing technical assistance initiative on Colombia\u2019s Pacific coast focused on the conservation and ecological restoration of mangroves.<\/p><div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"850\" height=\"567\" src=\"https:\/\/www.catie.ac.cr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/restauracion-ecologica3.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-34992\" style=\"width:414px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.catie.ac.cr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/restauracion-ecologica3.jpg 850w, https:\/\/www.catie.ac.cr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/restauracion-ecologica3-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.catie.ac.cr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/restauracion-ecologica3-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.catie.ac.cr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/restauracion-ecologica3-18x12.jpg 18w, https:\/\/www.catie.ac.cr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/restauracion-ecologica3-600x400.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 850px) 100vw, 850px\" \/><\/figure><\/div><p>The forum, organized by the Climate Technology Centre and Network (CTCN) \u2014the technical arm of the Technology Mechanism of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC)\u2014 gathered representatives from over 20 countries across the region in the context of the 2025 Latin America and Caribbean Climate Week.<\/p><p>The \u201cCuerval Sostenible\u201d technical assistance is being implemented in the territory of the El Cuerval Community Council, located in the municipality of Timbiqu\u00ed, department of Cauca. The project aims to strengthen local capacities for community-based participatory monitoring and to promote restoration strategies that integrate ancestral knowledge and the traditional lifestyles of Afro-descendant communities.<\/p><p>The presentation was delivered by Danilo Torres and Pablo Imbach, researchers from CATIE\u2019s Climate Action Unit, together with Allison del R\u00edo, representative of the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development of Colombia, the national focal point for CTCN in the country. The speakers outlined the project\u2019s objectives, products, and data collection methods, as well as key results achieved to date.<br><\/p><div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"850\" height=\"567\" src=\"https:\/\/www.catie.ac.cr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/restauracion-ecologica2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-34991\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.catie.ac.cr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/restauracion-ecologica2.jpg 850w, https:\/\/www.catie.ac.cr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/restauracion-ecologica2-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.catie.ac.cr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/restauracion-ecologica2-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.catie.ac.cr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/restauracion-ecologica2-18x12.jpg 18w, https:\/\/www.catie.ac.cr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/restauracion-ecologica2-600x400.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 850px) 100vw, 850px\" \/><\/figure><\/div><p><br><br>Among the shared advancements were:<\/p><p>\u2022\tAn updated map of mangrove coverage in the territory.<br>\u2022\tThe identification of ecosystem degradation drivers.<br>\u2022\tAn analysis of livelihoods linked to mangroves, including artisanal fishing and piangua (clam) harvesting.<br>\u2022\tAssociated ecosystem services and community responses to climate threats.<br>\u2022\tInitial proposals for restoration strategies in prioritized sites.<\/p><p>\u201cThe project aims to strengthen the technical capacities of the Cuerval Community Council in ecological mangrove restoration and community monitoring. By maintaining mangrove ecosystem services, we help support local livelihoods, reduce climate change impacts, and achieve mitigation benefits through avoided emissions,\u201d said Danilo Torres, CATIE researcher.<br>\u201cCuerval Sostenible\u201d also promotes technical and social innovation, combining remote sensing technologies with participatory training processes and local data generation.
