The event was organized by the Natural Capital Collaborative ( <em>Natural Capital Collaborative<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.efdinitiative.org\/natural-capital-collaborative-natcap\">NatCap<\/a>) program of the <em>Environment for Development<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.efdinitiative.org\/\">EfD<\/a>) initiative and took place from May 26 to 27 at the University of Cape Town, South Africa.<\/p><p>This gathering brought together researchers, government representatives, and professionals from the water, agricultural, and environmental sectors of countries in Africa, the Americas, and Europe. The central objective was to share experiences in natural capital management and collectively build a relevant research agenda for the Global South, with an emphasis on Sub-Saharan Africa. Workshop presentations and discussions focused on four major themes: biodiversity, water, forests, and agriculture.<\/p><p><strong>CATIE at the forefront of building solutions to improve water access<\/strong><\/p><p>As the host institution for the EfD initiative in Central America and Mexico (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.efdinitiative.org\/central-america-and-mexico\">EfD-CAM<\/a>), CATIE plays a central role in leading this research agenda. R\u00f3ger Madrigal, Coordinator of the Environmental Economics and Sustainable Agribusiness Unit (UEAAS\/<a href=\"https:\/\/www.efdinitiative.org\/central-america\">EfD<\/a>) at CATIE, actively participated as a presenter and facilitator.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"850\" height=\"638\" src=\"https:\/\/www.catie.ac.cr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Africa-Subsahariana-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-35296\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.catie.ac.cr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Africa-Subsahariana-2.jpg 850w, https:\/\/www.catie.ac.cr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Africa-Subsahariana-2-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.catie.ac.cr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Africa-Subsahariana-2-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.catie.ac.cr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Africa-Subsahariana-2-16x12.jpg 16w, https:\/\/www.catie.ac.cr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Africa-Subsahariana-2-600x450.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 850px) 100vw, 850px\" \/><\/figure><p>For the past three years, Madrigal has led the research agenda on water issues for EfD, focusing on solutions to address the challenges of scarcity and access to drinking water in urban centers. This line of research is being developed through comparative studies between Central America, Chile, Nigeria, Ghana, Uganda, Kenya, and South Africa.<\/p><p>\u201cAt the workshop, we discussed how to generate useful evidence to design public policies that ensure equitable and sustainable access to water, especially in cities of the Global South, where social and environmental challenges intensify due to urban growth and the impacts of climate change,\u201d Madrigal noted.<\/p><div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"850\" height=\"638\" src=\"https:\/\/www.catie.ac.cr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Africa-Subsahariana-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-35298\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.catie.ac.cr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Africa-Subsahariana-3.jpg 850w, https:\/\/www.catie.ac.cr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Africa-Subsahariana-3-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.catie.ac.cr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Africa-Subsahariana-3-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.catie.ac.cr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Africa-Subsahariana-3-16x12.jpg 16w, https:\/\/www.catie.ac.cr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Africa-Subsahariana-3-600x450.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 850px) 100vw, 850px\" \/><\/figure><\/div><p>The event also addressed research priorities, implementation pathways, and mechanisms for inter-institutional collaboration to move toward more resilient and sustainable systems for natural capital management, particularly in terrestrial landscapes marked by persistent poverty and inequality.<\/p><p class=\"translation-block\">Participating academics came from universities such as the <em>University of Cape Town <\/em>(South Africa), <em>University of Nigeria<\/em> (Nigeria), <em>Makerere University <\/em>(Uganda), <em>University of Dar es Salaam<\/em> (Tanzania), <em>Portland State University<\/em> (United States), <em>University of Geneva<\/em> (Switzerland), and <em>University of Gothenburg<\/em> (Sweden).
