For the 2024–2025 cycle, the program recorded a total of 2,387,985 trees planted throughout the national territory, with Guanacaste and Alajuela being the leading provinces in this effort.

This edition registered a wide variety of species—146 in total. AGROMIRA contributed both forest and fruit tree species, including Dama, Cupania, Cortez Negro, Casco de Venado, Corteza Amarillo, Rubber Tree, Cannonball Tree, Lorito, Cocobolo, Guapinol, Green Mamón, Water Apple, Soursop, Cas, Orange, Cherry, and others. These numbers don’t just represent trees — they represent hope for future generations,” said Mr. Felipe Vega, Executive Director of the ONF.

This program aligns with AGROMIRA’s ecological restoration and reforestation approach. Many of the trees were planted in biological corridors, areas with potential for ecological connectivity, or in spring zones and riverbanks — as was the case for AGROMIRA.

These actions are part of the legacy of AGROMIRA 2025, an event that brought together more than 300 people from over 20 countries on CATIE’s campus, aiming to offset the carbon footprint generated. They also support the principles of the Ecological Blue Flag award, which AGROMIRA earned with a perfect score of 100.

AGROMIRA 2025 formed an alliance with the Union of ASADAS of Turrialba and Jiménez (UNATUJI) to reforest water capture, recharge, and protection areas.

These 550 trees were made possible thanks to the donation of 200 trees by Upala Agrícola and 350 by the nursery of the Costa Rican Electricity Institute (ICE), located in Cachí, Cartago, coordinated by MINAE–SINAC Turrialba.

“We hope to continue contributing during the 2025–2026 period through further tree planting and working toward more sustainable communities for the well-being of the environment, while deepening AGROMIRA’s and its participants’ commitment to carbon footprint compensation,” said Anthony Gamboa, from the AGROMIRA 2025 Technical Committee.

More information:

Anthony Gamboa
AGROMIRA Technical Committee
Specialist in Sustainable Agribusiness
Unit for Environmental Economics and Sustainable Agribusiness (UEAAS/EfD)
CATIE
anthony.gamboa@catie.ac.cr

Written by::

Karla Madrigal Pereira
Communicator
Communications and Marketing Office
CATIE
