{"id":37816,"date":"2025-10-02T10:05:58","date_gmt":"2025-10-02T16:05:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.catie.ac.cr\/?p=37816"},"modified":"2025-10-02T15:32:53","modified_gmt":"2025-10-02T21:32:53","slug":"personas-defensoras-del-bosque-tortuguero-fortalecen-capacidades-en-derechos-humanos-ambientales","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.catie.ac.cr\/en\/2025\/10\/02\/personas-defensoras-del-bosque-tortuguero-fortalecen-capacidades-en-derechos-humanos-ambientales\/","title":{"rendered":"Defenders of the Tortuguero Forest strengthen capacities in environmental human rights"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><em><em><em><em><em><em><em><em><em><em><em><em>CATIE, in collaboration with the National System of Conservation Areas (SINAC), launched the Course on Environmental Human Rights in Tortuguero, in the province of Lim\u00f3n, Costa Rica.<\/em><\/em><\/em><\/em><\/em><\/em><\/em><\/em><\/em><\/em><\/em><\/em><\/li><\/ul><p>On September 21, 2025, at the auditorium of Tortuguero National Park (PNT), 19 people involved in forest protection participated in Module I of the Course on Environmental Human Rights and the Protection of the Great Forests of Mesoamerica (GBM), developed within the framework of the Weaving Networks project.<\/p><p>The event was attended by Nazareth Porras, Project Officer of the European Union; Leida Mercado, project leader from CATIE (Tropical Agricultural Research and Higher Education Center); and Andr\u00e9s Gonz\u00e1lez, responsible for citizen participation and governance at SINAC in Tortuguero National Park, who gave the opening remarks.<\/p><p>The group of participants included the Natural Resource Surveillance Committees (COVIRENAS), park rangers, naturalist guides, and community leaders (both men and women).<\/p><div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"850\" height=\"567\" src=\"https:\/\/www.catie.ac.cr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/bosque-tortuguero2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-37819\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.catie.ac.cr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/bosque-tortuguero2.jpg 850w, https:\/\/www.catie.ac.cr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/bosque-tortuguero2-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.catie.ac.cr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/bosque-tortuguero2-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.catie.ac.cr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/bosque-tortuguero2-18x12.jpg 18w, https:\/\/www.catie.ac.cr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/bosque-tortuguero2-600x400.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 850px) 100vw, 850px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Park rangers, COVIRENAS, naturalist guides, and community leaders of various ages participated in the training.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div><p><br>El contenido lo imparti\u00f3 un grupo de personas expertas en las tem\u00e1ticas de derechos humanos ambientales. Durante la jornada, las personas participantes se reconocieron como&nbsp; defensoras de los derechos humanos ambientales, aprendieron el concepto de interseccionalidad que, seg\u00fan Leocadia Liriano Bonifacio, l\u00edder ambientalista y afrodescendiente, \u201csirve para visibilizar las discriminaciones hacia las personas vulnerables\u201d, como lo son las personas defensoras que reciben amenazas y que, seg\u00fan su testimonio, enfrentan dificultades a la hora de denunciar estas situaciones ante las instituciones p\u00fablicas.<br><br><\/p><div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"850\" height=\"567\" src=\"https:\/\/www.catie.ac.cr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/bosque-tortuguero3.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-37820\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.catie.ac.cr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/bosque-tortuguero3.jpg 850w, https:\/\/www.catie.ac.cr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/bosque-tortuguero3-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.catie.ac.cr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/bosque-tortuguero3-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.catie.ac.cr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/bosque-tortuguero3-18x12.jpg 18w, https:\/\/www.catie.ac.cr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/bosque-tortuguero3-600x400.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 850px) 100vw, 850px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Defenders reflected on their experiences and challenges based on new concepts presented during the session.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div><p><br>They also learned about the international and regional human rights protection systems and milestones such as the Advisory Opinion of the Inter-American Court of Human Rights regarding Climate Change, and the Escaz\u00fa Agreement, the latter presented by Camila Mar\u00edn from the Escaz\u00fa Alliance Costa Rica.<\/p><p>At the end of the day, community leader V\u00edctor Barrantes shared that \u201cI had a mistaken concept (about the Agreement), formed mainly through the brief analysis that was given on social networks.\u201d During the session, he learned about other national laws addressing access rights and now believes that ratification can \u201cenrich our environmental protection laws with greater access to information, justice, and environmental democracy.\u201d<br><\/p><div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"839\" height=\"559\" src=\"https:\/\/www.catie.ac.cr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/bosque-tortuguero-foto-sustituta1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-37845\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.catie.ac.cr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/bosque-tortuguero-foto-sustituta1.jpg 839w, https:\/\/www.catie.ac.cr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/bosque-tortuguero-foto-sustituta1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.catie.ac.cr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/bosque-tortuguero-foto-sustituta1-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.catie.ac.cr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/bosque-tortuguero-foto-sustituta1-18x12.jpg 18w, https:\/\/www.catie.ac.cr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/bosque-tortuguero-foto-sustituta1-600x400.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 839px) 100vw, 839px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Dr. Natalia Castro Ni\u00f1o, Attorney at the Inter-American Court of Human Rights, facilitated the content related to the Inter-American protection system.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div><p><br>The participants highlighted the opportunity to learn about Costa Rica\u2019s environmental legal framework, acquire tools to strengthen their commitments as defenders, and share the content within their areas of action. Dr. Natalia Castro Ni\u00f1o, one of the facilitators and a lawyer at the Inter-American Court of Human Rights, emphasized that these capacity-building spaces for defenders are an opportunity to show them that \u201ceverything they do at the local level is very valuable and, at the same time, that they are not alone because there are people working in other places to support them.\u201d<\/p><p>The session was conducted in an atmosphere of trust, openness, and solidarity, which favored the exchange of ideas and experiences among the participants.
