{"id":38343,"date":"2025-10-22T07:35:52","date_gmt":"2025-10-22T13:35:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.catie.ac.cr\/?p=38343"},"modified":"2025-10-22T07:37:08","modified_gmt":"2025-10-22T13:37:08","slug":"catie-comparte-experiencias-sobre-mecanizacion-de-la-caficultura-sostenible-y-regenerativa-en-consejo-internacional-de-cafe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.catie.ac.cr\/en\/2025\/10\/22\/catie-comparte-experiencias-sobre-mecanizacion-de-la-caficultura-sostenible-y-regenerativa-en-consejo-internacional-de-cafe\/","title":{"rendered":"CATIE shares experiences on mechanization of sustainable and regenerative coffee farming with the International Coffee Council"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><em>During the Council\u2019s most recent session, held in Honduras, Dr. Elias de Melo presented the technical and scientific basis for this approach, as well as case studies from pilot farms.<\/em><\/li><\/ul><p>On the occasion of the 140th session of the International Coffee Council, held in San Pedro Sula, Honduras, from October 13 to 17, the Tropical Agricultural Research and Higher Education Center (CATIE) presented some \u201cConsiderations on mechanization for sustainable and regenerative coffee farming,\u201d by Dr. Elias de Melo, coordinator of the <a href=\"https:\/\/maestriacafe.catie.ac.cr\/\">International Virtual Master's and Advanced Diploma Program in Sustainable and Regenerative Coffee Farming<\/a>.<\/p><p>The International Coffee Council is the highest decision-making body in the global coffee sector, under the direction of the International Coffee Organization (ICO). Its most recent meeting in Honduras was a forum for defining and promoting global policies for the coffee sector, with the participation of representatives from producing and consuming countries around the world.<\/p><p>One of the topics discussed during the event was how to strengthen sustainability and ensure a future with quality of life for coffee-producing families. CATIE's presentation was given during the panel on \u201cMechanization and decent income.\u201d<\/p><p>\u201cThe presentation consisted of presenting technical and scientific foundations, as well as cases applied in pilot farms, of the holistic approach to the mechanization of coffee farming, guaranteeing both the benefits of efficiency and productivity in the management of coffee plantations and, at the same time, complying with the principles of sustainability and restoration of soils, water, and biodiversity in the context of climate change adaptation and mitigation,\u201d explained Dr. De Melo.<br><\/p><div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"850\" height=\"638\" src=\"https:\/\/www.catie.ac.cr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/mecanizacion2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-38346\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.catie.ac.cr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/mecanizacion2.jpg 850w, https:\/\/www.catie.ac.cr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/mecanizacion2-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.catie.ac.cr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/mecanizacion2-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.catie.ac.cr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/mecanizacion2-16x12.jpg 16w, https:\/\/www.catie.ac.cr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/mecanizacion2-600x450.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 850px) 100vw, 850px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Photo: Vanusia Nogueira-OIC<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div><p><br>During his presentation, De Melo explained that, in addition to the classic reasons for mechanizing coffee farming (increased productivity and reduced costs), there are other factors such as the intensification of climate change, imbalances in biogeochemical cycles, accelerated loss of biodiversity, depletion of quality water resources, as well as poverty and migration associated with environmental degradation.<\/p><p>The 140th session of the International Coffee Council was attended by representatives from more than 70 countries.
