{"id":38982,"date":"2025-11-27T13:25:28","date_gmt":"2025-11-27T19:25:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.catie.ac.cr\/?p=38982"},"modified":"2025-11-27T13:26:38","modified_gmt":"2025-11-27T19:26:38","slug":"catie-apoya-el-monitoreo-de-sedimentos-y-salinidad-en-la-cuenca-del-monkey-river-en-belice","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.catie.ac.cr\/en\/2025\/11\/27\/catie-apoya-el-monitoreo-de-sedimentos-y-salinidad-en-la-cuenca-del-monkey-river-en-belice\/","title":{"rendered":"CATIE supports sediment and salinity monitoring in the Monkey River Watershed in Belize"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><em><em><em><em><em><em>Actions supported by CATIE will generate reliable information for sustainable management of the watershed and its adaptation to climate variability.<\/em><\/em><\/em><\/em><\/em><\/em><\/li><\/ul><p>From November 17 to December 5, a strategic hydrological monitoring campaign is being carried out in the Monkey River watershed (GMRW), one of the most important ecological and productive areas in southern Belize.<\/p><div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"531\" height=\"709\" src=\"https:\/\/www.catie.ac.cr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Cuencas-Belice-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-38985\" style=\"width:318px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.catie.ac.cr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Cuencas-Belice-2.jpg 531w, https:\/\/www.catie.ac.cr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Cuencas-Belice-2-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.catie.ac.cr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Cuencas-Belice-2-9x12.jpg 9w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 531px) 100vw, 531px\" \/><\/figure><\/div><p>As part of this effort, CATIE\u2014through Ney R\u00edos and Christian Birkel, specialists from the Watersheds, Water Security, and Soils Unit (UCSHS)\u2014provides specialized technical assistance to the National Hydrological Service (NHS) to strengthen the measurement of sediments, flows, and salinity at key points on the Bladen, Swasey, and Monkey Rivers.<\/p><p>\u201cThis monitoring is important, as changes in land use, erosion, climate variability, and saline intrusion pose increasing risks to water, ecosystems, and communities,\u201d explained R\u00edos.<\/p><p class=\"translation-block\">This campaign will enable the determination of sediment dynamics (total suspended solids -  <em>TSS, bedload <\/em>, turbidity) across the high-medium-low gradient of the basin.
