{"id":40007,"date":"2026-01-26T14:55:14","date_gmt":"2026-01-26T20:55:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.catie.ac.cr\/?p=40007"},"modified":"2026-01-26T14:59:09","modified_gmt":"2026-01-26T20:59:09","slug":"investigacion-del-catie-fortalece-la-prevencion-de-incendios-en-costa-rica-y-en-la-region","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.catie.ac.cr\/en\/2026\/01\/26\/investigacion-del-catie-fortalece-la-prevencion-de-incendios-en-costa-rica-y-en-la-region\/","title":{"rendered":"CATIE Research Strengthens Fire Prevention in Costa Rica and the Region"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><em><em><em><em><em><em>A CATIE graduate\u2019s thesis also opened new professional opportunities<\/em><\/em><\/em><\/em><\/em><\/em><\/li><\/ul><p>Transforming the way fire is understood and managed in territories was the objective of the research conducted by Ireana Lara Damken, a graduate of the Master\u2019s Program in Management and Conservation of Tropical Forests and Biodiversity at CATIE\u2019s Graduate School (Tropical Agricultural Research and Higher Education Center).<\/p><p>Her thesis, \u201cStrengthening Fire Governance in the Tempisque Conservation Area, Costa Rica, as a Wildfire Prevention Strategy,\u201d addressed\u2014through an innovative approach\u2014one of the regions with the highest incidence of forest fires in the country. The study integrated territorial analysis, key stakeholders, and governance dynamics to improve prevention efforts.<\/p><p>Thanks to the knowledge acquired during her graduate studies, Ireana expanded her understanding of the causes and impacts of wildfires, fire use practices, and existing governance structures. She also developed a heat-spot mapping and identified concrete challenges to strengthen fire management.<br><\/p><div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"850\" height=\"479\" src=\"https:\/\/www.catie.ac.cr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Investigacion-incendios2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-40010\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.catie.ac.cr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Investigacion-incendios2.jpg 850w, https:\/\/www.catie.ac.cr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Investigacion-incendios2-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.catie.ac.cr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Investigacion-incendios2-768x433.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.catie.ac.cr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Investigacion-incendios2-18x10.jpg 18w, https:\/\/www.catie.ac.cr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Investigacion-incendios2-600x338.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 850px) 100vw, 850px\" \/><\/figure><\/div><p><br>\u201cThe master\u2019s program provided me with statistical and conceptual foundations, as well as a deeper understanding of the complexity of the territory, the different actors involved, and the need to listen to diverse perspectives to resolve conflicts,\u201d she explains.<\/p><p>The project was strengthened through partnerships with SINAC and other stakeholders of the Chorotega Model Forest, connections facilitated by CATIE through the Latin American Model Forest Network, demonstrating how applied research can generate real impact in territories.<\/p><p>Today, Ireana continues to develop this work through an internship at CATIE, contributing to fire governance not only in Costa Rica but also in other Latin American countries, thereby consolidating the professional benefits of her graduate training.<\/p><p>Enrollment for the Master\u2019s Program in Management and Conservation of Tropical Forests and Biodiversity at CATIE\u2019s Graduate School is currently open.
