{"id":41143,"date":"2026-04-22T09:07:02","date_gmt":"2026-04-22T15:07:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.catie.ac.cr\/?p=41143"},"modified":"2026-04-22T09:10:22","modified_gmt":"2026-04-22T15:10:22","slug":"dialogo-territorial-impulsa-soluciones-climaticas-desde-comunidades-indigenas-en-panama","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.catie.ac.cr\/en\/2026\/04\/22\/dialogo-territorial-impulsa-soluciones-climaticas-desde-comunidades-indigenas-en-panama\/","title":{"rendered":"Territorial dialogue drives climate solutions from Indigenous communities in Panama"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><em><em><em><em><em><em><em><em><em>28 community leaders and representatives from Kusap\u00edn, Bah\u00eda Azul and R\u00edo Chiriqu\u00ed participated in this space for reflection and local action.<\/em><\/em><\/em><\/em><\/em><\/em><\/em><\/em><\/em><\/li><\/ul><p class=\"translation-block\">With the aim of reflecting on climate change and strengthening responses from Indigenous territories, the first territorial dialogue \u201cBuilding local climate solutions from the territory\u201d was held on March 31, 2026, at the municipal auditorium of Kusap\u00edn, \u00d1\u00f6 Kribo Region, Panama. The event brought together 28 community leaders and representatives of organizations, as well as presidents of Adaptation and Livelihood Commissions from the districts of Kusap\u00edn, Bah\u00eda Azul and R\u00edo Chiriqu\u00ed.<\/p><p class=\"translation-block\">The dialogue was moderated by activist Jhonathan Vejerano, president of the Ng\u00e4be Bugl\u00e9 Youth Forum, with the participation of prominent leaders, including: Salincio Taylor, Local Cacique of Kusap\u00edn; Yorniel Sam, from ADESPU (Association for the Development of Ecotourism Playa Uva); Reveca Abrego, field technician of the Kusap\u00edn Se Adapta project; and Ilfido Molina, community leader.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-1 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\"><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-id=\"41147\" src=\"https:\/\/www.catie.ac.cr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/indigenas-panama2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-41147\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-id=\"41148\" src=\"https:\/\/www.catie.ac.cr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/indigenas-panama3.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-41148\"\/><\/figure><\/figure><p><br>The dialogue aimed to empower local Indigenous leadership, highlighting the role of communities in addressing emerging climate challenges in the territory.<\/p><p>This space underscored the importance of ancestral knowledge as a fundamental tool for addressing climate challenges, recognizing the Indigenous communities of Kusap\u00edn as agents of change and key actors in the search for sustainable solutions.<\/p><p class=\"translation-block\">This action is part of the activities carried out the project \u201cImproving adaptive capacity to climate change in the district of Kusap\u00edn through nature-based solutions and community processes,\u201d locally known as Kusap\u00edn Se Adapta, funded by the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID) and implemented by CATIE (Tropical Agricultural Research and Higher Education Center), in coordination with the Ministry of Environment of Panama (MIAMBIENTE).<\/p><div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.catie.ac.cr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/indigenas-panama4.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-41149\"\/><\/figure><\/div><p class=\"translation-block\">According to Erick Trotman, Head of Coasts and Seas at MIAMBIENTE in the Ng\u00e4be Bugl\u00e9 Comarca, \u201cThe territorial dialogue strengthens community organizations, reaffirms the role of traditional authorities, and consolidates institutional work in the implementation of natural resource conservation policies, recognizing traditional knowledge.\u201d<\/p><p>In this same context, Salincio Taylor, Local Cacique of the Kusap\u00edn District, stated:<\/p><p class=\"translation-block\">\u201c<em>\u201cThis dialogue has been very enriching, as we have shared our experiences and ancestral knowledge, which are part of our identity and culture. We have also recognized that this knowledge is fundamental to addressing climate change. We hope that this activity can be repeated, also including the participation of our elders, so they can pass on their knowledge.
