Coffee adaptation to climate change in Central America (Caf’Adapt)

Thematic

Climate change; Coffee production
Location

Costa Rica, Honduras and Nicaragua

Nicaragua:

  • - Irrigation in San Marcos, Jinotepe
  • - Coffee hybrids in Jinotega, Estelí and Boaco
Period Active
2011-2014
Description Research project dedicated to examining coffee susceptibility to climate change. It includes components of validating adaptation technologies such as equipment, genetic stock and concretizing strategies for sectorial adaptation to climate change in Central America.
Principal Activities

1) Validation of the CAF2007 model under varying agroclimate conditions.

2) Determine the response of the coffee plant to increasing CO2 under different climate conditions.

3) Estimate the potential impact of climate change on coffee productivity at the producer field scale.

4) Determine change in certain areas and coffee production levels under different scenarios of Greenhouse Gas Emissions (GGE).

5) Evaluate potential management options to minimize the impacts of climate change.

6) Evaluate the potential of hybrid genetic materials to minimize the impacts of climate change.

7) Estimate the potential benefits of management and genetic technologies at the national level.

8) Evaluate the acceptability of new adaptation technologies at the producer level.

9) Develop with the coffee sector policies to support the implementation of adaptation strategies.

Coffee Research Plot, Masatepe

Thematic

Agroforestry systems with coffee; Biophysical investigation; Multi-institutional and multi-disciplinary research; Long-term investigation

Location

Masatepe, Departamento de Masaya, Nicaragua

Period Active

2000-2019

Description

Basic and routine monitoring studies regarding multiple components of coffee production systems: trees, soil, disease, climate, production, coffee quality and management costs. The Plot is a long-term initiative providing information of change over time as well as an opportunity for researchers from around the world to develop studies using a mature and scientific trial site.

Principal Activities

1) Research sustainable coffee production processes.

2) Develop human resources in agricultural research via thesis work at multiple levels.

3) Share results from investigations with different audiences via diverse media and formats (e.g. publications, scientific articles, presentations, meetings, field days, etc.)
