ADAMA and Colono Agropecuario Reinforce Their Commitment to CATIE’s International Coffee Collection

The alliance between CATIE (Tropical Agricultural Research and Higher Education Center) and the company ADAMA continues to grow in support of the conservation and development of the International Coffee Collection, located on CATIE’s campus in Turrialba, Costa Rica.
Thanks to a cooperation agreement initiated in 2023, ADAMA continues to contribute through the donation of agricultural inputs. Colono Agropecuario joins the effort as a new donor partner, having recently become the official distributor of ADAMA products in Costa Rica.
The joint collaboration of both companies strengthens CATIE’s capacity to preserve the collection, which is the fourth most important worldwide, the second in Latin America, and the most diverse outside Africa for the Coffea arabica species. Globally, it is recognized as one of the four “origin” collections.
“The proper and timely application of these inputs is essential for the maintenance of the coffee plants in our collection. It allows us to maintain vigorous plants with fewer disease issues, which results in higher-quality plant material and seeds used for conservation, research, and distribution to other centers or producers,” explained Daniel Fernández from CATIE’s Coffee and Cocoa Breeding Unit.

From ADAMA, the commitment is clear: “We are proud to be one of the sponsors of this collection. We understand the significance of this collection for both Costa Rican and global coffee production. We thank CATIE for allowing us to be part of this important work. This is our third consecutive year supporting the collection with these products,” said Geovanny Romero, representative of ADAMA.
Guiselle Montoya from Colono Agropecuario emphasized the honor it is for the company to join this alliance. “At Colono Agropecuario, we are honored to participate alongside ADAMA as commercial partners in supporting this coffee collection—one backed by years of research, passion, and a genuine commitment to strengthening regional coffee producers.”
This partnership is a prime example of how collaboration between the private sector and academia can generate positive impacts for agricultural sustainability, genetic diversity conservation, and territorial development.
