Turrialba Journal is available for online consultation

- All volumes of the historic agricultural science journal were digitized by the Orton Memorial Library.
The team at the Orton Memorial Library succeeded in digitizing all issues of the Inter-American Journal of Agricultural Sciences “Turrialba” and making them available to the public in the CATIE repository.
This important publication originated in 1950 on the initiative of Ralph R. Shaw, director of the Library of the United States Department of Agriculture, and Armando Samper, then an official at the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA). Although its original purpose was to disseminate the research of the then IICA Teaching and Research Center (which later became CATIE), it subsequently opened up the possibility of publishing work from other tropical regions.
According to an article published in 1990 by Zaidett Barrientos and Julián Monge-Nájera, the main topics covered by Revista Turrialba were plant physiology and pathology, soils, and agricultural techniques. In addition, there were regular publications on technical topics such as pesticides and fertilizers, and others that were novel and of great interest at the time, such as plant breeding genetics and biological control.
“This is a project to preserve and promote CATIE's scientific output. Revista Turrialba is one of the most valuable sources of information that the agricultural sector in the Americas has ever had,” said Jeffry Jiménez, coordinator of the Orton Memorial Library.
has ever had,” said Jeffry Jiménez, coordinator of the Orton Memorial Library.
The Turrialba Journal consists of 45 volumes, published between 1950 and 1995. All are now available for consultation at the following address: https://repositorio.catie.ac.cr/handle/11554/11367
