      • During the visit, the delegation learned about the Graduate School’s academic offer, research programs on coffee and cocoa, climate change adaptation initiatives, and sustainable entrepreneurship projects.

CATIE (Tropical Agricultural Research and Higher Education Center) welcomed to its campus a high-level delegation from Collaboration for Impact (CFI), led by its CEO of the Mastercard Foundation, Reeta Roy, who visited the institution together with 17 representatives of the foundation as part of an international education-focused retreat.

During their stay, the delegation selected CATIE as the official venue for their strategic meeting, highlighting the institution’s reputation as a benchmark in higher education, scientific research, and the training of leaders in tropical agriculture, as well as its international projection in South-South cooperation.

The agenda included an institutional presentation by CATIE’s Director General, Dr. Luis Pocasangre, and the Dean of the Graduate School, Dr. Alfredo Zamarripa, which addressed CATIE’s three strategic pillars: research, training, and education, with special emphasis on its master’s degree academic programs.

One of the points that generated great interest was CATIE’s coffee genetic improvement program and its renowned international collection. The foundation’s CEO, Reeta Roy, expressed her interest in exploring cooperation mechanisms for Africa, particularly to facilitate access to improved materials that can contribute to the continent’s productive development. It was emphasized that these materials are public goods available for transfer.

Likewise, the delegation visited the international cocoa collection, validating and comparing its importance for countries such as Côte d’Ivoire and Ghana, the world’s leading cocoa producers, and identifying opportunities for scientific and productive collaboration.

Education, leadership, and climate change adaptation

The delegation also expressed strong interest in CATIE’s climate change adaptation projects, particularly the risk studies and value chain analyses developed for Rwanda and Ethiopia, which could be replicated in other African countries.
