      • The signing of the agreement was made official on February 15, 2023 between the Ministry of Education, Culture, Science and Technology of Belize and CATIE.

February 16, 2023. During the last few months, the president of the board of directors of CATIE (Tropical Agricultural Research and Higher Education Center), Gale Miller-Garnett, together with the Center's director general, Muhammad Ibrahim, held talks with Francis Fonseca, Belize's Minister of Education, Culture, Science and Technology, and Diane Castillo-Maheia, Director General of the Ministry, to formalize the signing of an agreement that will provide quality higher education opportunities for Belizean professionals.

The agreement is committed to postgraduate studies in strategic areas that contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals and the Green and Blue Economic Development Plan, under the responsibility of the government of Belize.

For more than 70 years, CATIE has established itself as one of the graduate universities with the longest trajectory in Latin America and the Caribbean, graduating more than 2,800 professionals from various countries around the world. Currently, the professional master's degrees offered by the Graduate School of the Center are focused in areas such as:

      • Agroforestry and Sustainable Agriculture
      • Management and Conservation of Tropical Forests and Biodiversity
      • Watershed Management and Watershed Management
      • Economics, Development and Climate Change

Tanya Santos, a CATIE graduate, and the Director General of the Ministry of Human Development, Families and Indigenous Peoples' Affairs also participated in the signing of the agreement. We thank the Ministry of Education, Culture, Science and Technology for their warm welcome, support and confidence to continue working bilaterally for the benefit of the region.
