The marketing of Honduras' fishing sector strengthens
- Andrea Garay, specialist in sustainable agribusiness at CATIE, visited the Honduran coastal area at the end of January to gather information and engage in dialogue with individuals involved in fishing activities.
February 6, 2024. In the coastal area of La Ceiba, Honduras, specialists in sustainable agribusiness from the Environmental Economics and Sustainable Agribusiness Unit (UEAAS/EfD) of CATIE (Tropical Agricultural Research and Higher Education Center) are contributing to the design of a marketing strategy to improve the commercialization and increase demand for products from the fishing sector.
Andrea Garay, who recently visited the Honduran Atlantic zone, conducted a workshop on January 31, allowing around 15 fishermen from La Ceiba and La Mosquitia to express, among other aspects, their expectations regarding the type of customers and products.
Furthermore, for the purpose of the work, Garay was able to visit the collection center and conduct interviews with fishermen and partners of the Northern Coast Fishermen's Network of Honduras (REDPESCAH), which is a second-level association that brings together small-scale fishermen, and for which the market strategy is being developed.
Importance of the project
"The importance of the project lies in the fact that previous studies and actions have already been carried out to strengthen the fishing sector in Honduras, and now what is sought is for an organization like REDPESCAH to implement strategies that contribute to improving the marketing and sale of its products," explained Garay.
"This effort is being carried out alongside technical personnel from La Ceiba, as well as representatives from GOAL, the Irish cooperation agency that finances this effort, in order for the strategy design to be in line with the organization and the fishing sector," added the CATIE agribusiness specialist.
Part of what is expected to be contributed with this work is that the sector has concrete inputs, which, after market analysis at the national and international levels, allow for more accurate marketing actions according to demand, and that together with the members of REDPESCAH, actions can be established to improve marketing and increase sales.
The work developed by CATIE began in November 2023 and is expected to conclude during the first quarter of 2024. It is financed by the humanitarian response agency GOAL, which has offices in Honduran territory. In turn, the work is part of the project called Coastal Biodiversity Regional.
