National Platform for Sustainable Livestock Leads Efforts for Low-Emission Livestock in Honduras

- During the first ordinary session of 2025, the National Platform for Sustainable Livestock of Honduras (PNGSH) provided a key space for the MAF-Livestock-Honduras project to present progress in the implementation of sustainable practices that are transforming the country’s livestock sector.
The Secretariat of Agriculture and Livestock of Honduras (SAG), under the leadership of Minister Laura Elena Suazo, presided over the first ordinary session of 2025 of the National Platform for Sustainable Livestock of Honduras (PNGSH). The meeting brought together producers and representatives from more than 40 institutions from the public and private sectors, academia, civil society, and international cooperation agencies in the country.
During the session, the project Transforming the Honduran Livestock Sector into a Low-Carbon Economy" (MAF-Livestock-HN), implemented by CATIE (Tropical Agricultural Research and Higher Education Center), played a prominent role by presenting the main achievements made during its execution.
The presentation was given by Juan Carlos Flores, national coordinator of the MAF-Livestock-HN project, who highlighted the impact of the sustainable, resilient, and productive livestock practices promoted by the initiative. These actions have been essential to consolidating interinstitutional efforts in favor of a low-emission, territorially focused, and climate-smart livestock system.
Minister Suazo, accompanied by the Vice Minister of Livestock, Ángel Acosta, acknowledged the project's commitment to strengthening local capacities, providing technical support to producers, and developing a financial mechanism that encourages the adoption of sustainable practices in the sector.
Additionally, the importance of coordinated work among the 42 institutions currently comprising the PNGSH was emphasized, as an example of collaborative governance. This platform promotes the integration of all stakeholders linked to the livestock sector—producers, government, private sector, academia, and international cooperation—under a participatory approach to decision-making.
