From Territory to Action: Advancing Livestock Management in Olancho

      • The Regional Sustainable Livestock Roundtable of Olancho, Honduras, is advancing its institutional strengthening with the development of its regulatory guide.

In a key effort to consolidate governance in the livestock sector of Olancho, Honduras, the Regional Sustainable Livestock Roundtable has taken a significant step toward institutional strengthening through the development of its regulatory guide. This initiative is supported technically by the project Transforming the Honduran Livestock Sector into a Low-Carbon Economy (MAF-Ganadería-HN), led by the Secretariat of Agriculture and Livestock (SAG) and the Secretariat of Natural Resources and Environment (SERNA), and implemented by CATIE (Tropical Agricultural Research and Higher Education Center), with the active participation of at least eight strategic partners in the Honduran livestock sector.

This regulatory document will clearly establish the structure, functions, and coordination mechanisms of the roundtable, consolidating it as a legitimate space for dialogue and territorial planning focused on sustainable livestock farming.

The working session was held at the facilities of the National University of Agriculture (UNAG) in Catacamas, with the active participation of the roundtable’s Board of Directors, made up of representatives from UNAG, Fundation PROLANCHO, the Federation of Farmers and Ranchers of Olancho and Related Sectors of Honduras (FAGOAH), the Chamber of Commerce and Industries of Catacamas (CCICAT), the Río Plátano Agroforestry Cooperative Limited (COAFORPLA), and Heifer International. The session also received technical support from the National Federation of Farmers and Ranchers of Honduras (FENAGH).

During the session, the draft of the guide was collectively reviewed, the result of a participatory process that integrated technical and organizational contributions from actors in the territory.

As part of the agreements reached, it was proposed to formally invite the National Platform for Sustainable Livestock (PNGS) to participate in the next session of the roundtable, with the goal of strengthening coordination between territorial stakeholders and national authorities in the sector.

This progress positions the Olancho roundtable as a reference for institutional and multisectoral coordination within the PNGS framework, demonstrating that it is possible to build governance from the territories with a sustainable and shared-responsibility vision.

The MAF-Ganadería-HN project, funded by the Mitigation Action Facility (MAF), reaffirms its commitment to continue promoting collaborative processes that foster productive sustainability and strengthen institutional frameworks within the livestock sector in Honduras.
