CATIE and IICA strengthen technical cooperation between Peru and Costa Rica in resilient agriculture and sustainable livestock

• The session included a technical–scientific discussion on Graduate School training, watershed management, and the development of tools to estimate GHG emissions in the agricultural sector.

CATIE (Tropical Agricultural Research and Higher Education Center), in coordination with the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA), strengthened horizontal cooperation efforts between Peru’s Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation (MIDAGRI) and Costa Rica’s Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAG), through the reception of a technical mission composed of 13 high-level officials.

The Peruvian delegation addressed strategic topics in agroecology, climate change, sustainable livestock, and resilient agriculture, with the aim of reinforcing Peru’s agricultural policies and strategies in the face of increasing climate vulnerability.

During their visit to CATIE’s campus, the specialists learned about the evaluation trials of elite coffee hybrids, with particular focus on agronomic management practices, agroforestry techniques, and regenerative agriculture approaches applied in productive systems.

Subsequently, the delegation toured the commercial sustainable livestock farm, where the tropical livestock model, silvopastoral systems, herd genetic improvement strategies, and technological innovations implemented to increase milk production efficiency were presented.

The session included a technical–scientific discussion addressing topics related to graduate school training and education, watershed management, and the development of tools to estimate greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the agricultural sector.

CATIE and IICA reaffirm their commitment to placing their technical cooperation and applied research capacities at the service of Member States, promoting a regional agriculture grounded in science, innovation, and education.
