CATIE and the Ministry of Agriculture of Honduras advance a joint agenda on sustainable agriculture

- Meeting addressed collaboration on sustainable livestock, coffee, cacao, and climate risk analysis for Honduras’ agricultural sector
Dr. Luis Pocasangre, Director General of CATIE (Tropical Agricultural Research and Higher Education Center), held a working meeting with the Minister of Agriculture and Livestock of Honduras, His Excellency Mr. Moisés Molina, at the ministerial office of the Secretariat of Agriculture and Livestock (SAG) in Tegucigalpa.
During the meeting, discussions focused on establishing a cooperation agenda between CATIE and SAG on strategic priorities such as sustainable livestock systems, coffee and cacao production within agroforestry systems, and climate risk analysis affecting agriculture and agribusiness. Both authorities agreed on the importance of strengthening capacities so that producers can transition toward more competitive and resilient business models.
Dr. Pocasangre also highlighted Minister Molina’s academic and regional trajectory, as well as their long-standing collaboration in regional initiatives, including actions to prevent the spread of Tropical Race 4 of Fusarium in bananas within the framework of OIRSA.
“As a Honduran and Director General of CATIE, I am committed to working closely with the Minister of SAG on agricultural projects that benefit producers in Honduras. We also discussed supporting agricultural education through the CATIE Graduate School in Costa Rica, where four young Hondurans will enroll this year in the Master’s programs in Agroforestry and Tropical Forests and Biodiversity,” said Dr. Pocasangre.
Through this engagement, CATIE reaffirms its commitment to working jointly with the Government of Honduras to promote the sustainable development of the agricultural sector and improve the well-being of producers across the country.
“For us, it is essential to consolidate strategic alliances with research institutions such as CATIE, which enable knowledge transfer, productivity improvements, and progress toward a more competitive and sustainable agricultural sector,” stated Minister Molina.
