The new master’s modality at CATIE (Tropical Agricultural Research and Higher Education Center) is ideal for those who wish to pursue graduate studies without having to leave their jobs.

The Professional Master’s in Sustainable Tourism (MIST) combines cutting-edge research with the practical approaches of Costa Rica’s leading sustainable tourism practitioners. In this way, our graduates acquire both the operational skills needed in the industry and the scientific preparation demanded by the tourism sector.

TARGET AUDIENCE

  • Current students in business administration, hospitality management, tourism, environmental sciences, social sciences, natural resources management, environmental education, land-use management, and related disciplines.
  • Professionals working in the hospitality and tourism industry, park and private reserve administration, development agencies/offices, ministries of tourism or environment, and, in general, professionals who wish to integrate sustainability into their roles.

The master’s degree can be completed in a minimum of 18 months. The credits are distributed across 6 trimesters, with a minimum and maximum of 9 and 12 credits, respectively, to be taken per trimester.

The curriculum includes 14 courses, of which MISTK 507 is offered in person at CATIE (21 days), and courses MISTK 600 and MISTK 601 have an in-person option. All other courses are trimester-based and delivered virtually.

  • Proficiency in one of the program’s two official languages: Spanish or English
  • Two letters of recommendation

Tuition payment deadline: February 20, 2026

Classes begin: March 2, 2026

Total investment: USD 10,600

Payment options: Quarterly, semi-annual, or annual payments.
