CATIE is an international center and university whose key functions are teaching, research, innovation for development and technical cooperation in agriculture, natural resources, and the environment. The institution works in strategic alliance with producers, organizations, partners, public and private institutions, universities, municipalities, donors, and cooperators at the local, national, and international level.

The international recognition of its postgraduate teaching program is based on its quality, experience, teaching what it does with multiple partners in the countries, sharing the advances and state of the art of science and technology in the different fields of interest, the diversity, experience, internationality, academic, scientific and professional level of its teaching staff, the richness that sharing, analyzing and discussing the professional experiences of its students from different countries of America and other continents means for learning, as well as the interaction personalized with each student.

With its postgraduate level program, CATIE has the mission of contributing to the development of the intellectual capital of the countries that make up the Inter-American System, in a way that allows innovative scientific and technical contributions to be made, and to assume leadership in the fields of agricultural sciences, natural resources, local and rural development, the environment and other related areas.

Postgraduate studies are conceived and structured to offer professionals, with a university degree, the skills, abilities, theoretical and practical knowledge, competences, dexterity, attitudes, and values ​​necessary for qualitative and quantitative technical and scientific research, to higher education and development. Likewise, they promote managerial capacity and the approach of climate-smart territories in agricultural production systems, as well as the management of natural resources and the environment.

Its approach is interdisciplinary and comprehensive. The curriculum is designed considering the experience of more than 70 years in postgraduate education, institutional evolution, the dynamics of the agricultural and environmental surroundings, natural resources, and rural development at the national, regional, and international levels, as well as the demand of the countries of the region.

Topics that are transversal to the issues of agriculture, natural resources, environment, and development are addressed, such as climate change and climate variability, food security, approaches and territorial management, markets and value chains, ecosystem services, livelihoods, comprehensive management of water resources, governance and institutionality, policies and regulations, organization and participation, poverty reduction and human well-being.

CATIE's Graduate School is characterized by a clear commitment to serving the communities of Latin America and the Caribbean, and by stimulating excellence, leadership, competitiveness, innovation, values, and cooperation among the student community.

Faculty

Our scientific research and postgraduate education faculty is made up of more than 40 professionals of 18 different nationalities with different specialties and significant experience.

Costa Rica: an educational destination

Costa Rica, CATIE's host country, is also an educational destination, with a high human development index and an internationally recognized tradition in environmental conservation and development. Its population is peaceful and friendly, with around 4.6 million inhabitants.

In addition, this nation is distinguished by its good quality of services, citizen security and scenic beauty. Likewise, the network of national parks and conservation areas of Costa Rica, its abundant biodiversity and an exceptional geographical location make it a point of convergence between scholars and institutions related to natural resources, the environment and agriculture.

CATIE is a unique university, different from traditional universities, research centers and extension organizations or services, because it achieves an integral combination of all of them, in an international and multicultural environment, enriching for the student body, focused on achieving comprehensive knowledge management. At CATIE, students can work in the field with real problems and accompanied by their teachers, with a solid scientific base and linked to development projects.

At CATIE there is an international particularity, present only in some prestigious universities in the world, represented by its staff, students, and graduates of more than 50 nationalities and, above all, by its presence and participation in all the countries of Latin America through its offices, projects, hundreds of partners, educational activities, publications, and graduates.
