- On Sunday, November 20, a volunteer event was held that brought together civil society, groups and organizations, including CATIE and VertoEducation, to raise environmental awareness in the canton.
November 21, 2022. Yesterday, CATIE ( Tropical Agricultural Research and Higher Education Center) joined different organizations and environmental groups in the country with the purpose of supporting the efforts of the community of Turrialba towards a cleaner, more conscious and environmentally friendly canton, through the #NoSeasPlástico cleanup day in the central area of Turrialba.
More than 80 volunteers participated in the activity, which consisted of collecting waste in the areas of the Turrialba and Colorado rivers, as well as restoring and beautifying public spaces in the Las Palmeras area, where six murals were painted.
Thanks to volunteer work, a total of 1,202 kilograms (kg) of waste was collected: 1,150 kg of non-recoverable waste; 37.5 kg of number 1 and 2 plastics; 12 kg of glass; and 2.5 kg of electronic products.
The activity was organized by the Preserve Planet Collection Center (CAPP, its Spanish acronym), Descubre Turrialba and CATIE, in addition to the support of institutions such as the Municipality of Turrialba, the Public Force, the Fire Department, volunteers from Raleigh Costa Rica, VertoEducation, Asociación Unidas y Unidos por Nuestro Cantón, Turrialba Va Primero, Preserve Planet, Explore Turrialba, Enviajarme, Construyendo Conexiones, Aldeas Infantiles SOS Costa Rica, No Seas Plástico and civil society.
For more than 70 years, CATIE's headquarters have been located in Turrialba, for which we thank each of the organizations and groups that allowed us to be part of this important event, which undoubtedly brings us closer to continue working together and create greater awareness towards the protection and rural development of the canton.
